CMC, Moto release updated version of HMS
By Traci Patterson
CedMagazine.com - May 16, 2008

The Comcast Media Center (CMC) and Motorola have released an updated version of the headend management system (HMS), which will enable HITS Quantum affiliates to offer advanced services such as video-on-demand (VOD) and interactive video applications.

Other solutions require market-based management systems and technical support for set-top authorization and for receiving, processing and distributing digital video, audio and data services to local cable customers, but the companies said that their solution does not.

The enhancements allow HITS Quantum affiliates to continue using deployed digital set-tops boxes (STBs) in their markets while introducing a variety of next-generation set-tops, which range from lower-cost devices that can support standard-definition (SD) digital video services to STBs that are capable of delivering advanced services, such as high-definition television (HDTV), video-on-demand (VOD) and digital video recorders (DVRs).

The new HMS provides set-top addressability via an Internet-based IP VPN connection to local digital headends, enabling HITS Quantum affiliates to support CableCard-enabled devices. The platform is also designed to support future devices and applications that will ride on the tru2way platform.

“We recognize that many cable operators, particularly those serving smaller markets, need a highly cost effective solution for offering a competitive lineup of services to their customers,” said Gary Traver, SVP and COO at CMC. “This means they need to be able to build upon their existing capital investments and minimize their equipment and maintenance costs, the guideposts for the HMS solution from the CMC and Motorola.”
