* Sprint gives handset access to Rev A network
By Brian Santo

Sprint has enabled a mobile handset to work with its EV-DO Rev A network.

Previously, Rev A – used by Sprint and Verizon Wireless – was accessible only by PCs equipped with connection cards.

The phone in question is the HTC Mogul. The company is providing a downloadable software patch for extant HTC Mogul handsets. EV-DO Rev A offers a theoretical maximum transmission rate of 1.4 Mbps.

* RCN lights optical ring for Philly business district
By Brian Santo

RCN Metro Optical Networks, a division of RCN Corp., has begun offering services in Philadelphia.

The company said it has completed a fiber ring that covers the Central Business District of Philadelphia. The network is based on Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), enabling Metro Ethernet services to SONET and Wavelength services, IP transport and Network Management services.

* ECI launches ECI 1Net, Carrier Ethernet 9000 Family
By Traci Patterson

ECI Telecom has launched ECI 1Net, a framework focusing on the optimal transition to next-generation networks through the combination of multi-functional network equipment, integrated solutions and a suite of professional services. ECI 1Net’s framework includes managed services, ECI's portfolio of products and partner products, as well as full solutions such as next-generation voice and residential triple-play.

Simultaneously, ECI announced the Carrier Ethernet 9000 Family, a part of the ECI 1Net platform that complements ECI's existing next-gen packet-optical and access product lines. The 9000 product line includes Carrier Ethernet switch routers, aggregation switches and demarcation units for the metro core, metro access and customer premises. The line is also integrated with ECI's WDM/ROADM and Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPP), based on the XDM and BroadGate metro networking platforms.

All ECI 1Net products, including the new 9000 Carrier Ethernet Switch Router (CESR) Family, will deliver optimal access and metro networking solutions that are agnostic of specific technology or network architectures, ECI said, allowing the company’s customers to support their current services and giving them the flexibility to deploy new offerings.
