NCTA, SCTE call for technical papers

The NCTA Technical Papers and papers for the SCTE Conference on Emerging Technologies will both be published at Cable Connection-Spring, being held April 1-7, 2009, in Washington, D.C., and abstracts are due on Dec. 1.

The organizations are looking for new ideas. They are also asking for papers with reference value or archival value, high science for an advanced audience, and problem-solving capabilities . While any topic of interest to broadband cable telecommunications engineering professionals is eligible, topics of particular interest for 2009 include:

  • Wireless broadband data and voice architectures and protocols, including Wi-Fi, WiMAX and mobile/handheld.
  • Interactive advertising, including measurement, reporting and addressability.
  • Techniques for scaling cable network bandwidth utilization and efficiency.
  • Advancements in managing bandwidth in cable broadband networks.
  • Digital audio and video coding, conversion and processing.
  • Advanced optical platforms and solutions specific to services delivery in cable networks.
  • System-on-chip and other integrated silicon solutions applicable to delivery of services through cable systems.
  • Business and operational support systems.
  • Other advanced broadband technology topics related to next generation cable network architecture.

 

Verizon offers high-speed Internet to more consumers in N.C., Ohio

Consumers and businesses in Monroe, N.C., and in Cadiz, Cambridge, Carrolton, Marion, New Philadelphia and Tiltonsville, Ohio, now have access to Verizon’s high-speed Internet service.

Verizon high-speed Internet subscribers have access to online protection with the Verizon Internet Security Suite, Verizon Enhanced E-mail, Verizon Premium Tech Support, online gaming, free news from ABC News Now, free sports from ESPN360 and more.

Verizon's entry-level service offers speeds of up to 1 Mbps downstream and 384 kbps upstream, and consumers can order the new entry-level service for $9.99 per month for the first six months with a one-year contract. Monthly pricing for the remainder of the annual plan will be $21.99 per month. Verizon's up-to-3 Mbps/768 kbps service is $19.99 for the first six months as part of an annual plan, with the following six-month pricing of $31.99 per month.
