BigBand Networks said today that it has reached a milestone by deploying its switched digital video (SDV) technology in Motorola set-top boxes (STBs).

Two unnamed cable operators are using BigBand’s SDV technology in systems that collectively pass one million homes.

“Operators are actively deploying our SDV solution in Motorola systems,” said Biren Sood, BigBand’s VP and GM of cable video. “SDV continues to be the most cost-efficient way to expand HDTV in any set-top environment – approximately one-fourth the cost of an immediate all-digital migration according to our calculations.”

BigBand has deployed its SDV products in more than 20 cable systems across North America. Charter, Cox Communications, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision and Comcast are among BigBand’s SDV customers.

BigBand recently started deploying its fifth-generation SDV technology (story here) and currently has its SDV technology in four electronic programming guide (EPG) environments.
