BigBand Networks is set to demonstrate new switched digital video (SDV) technologies at the National Cable & Telecommunications Association's (NCTA) The Cable Show '08, being held May 18-20 in New Orleans.
SDV sends just the programming that is being watched in a service group, instead of the entire slate of a cable operators’ lineup, which allows MSOs to reclaim bandwidth for other services, such as adding more high-definition (HD) channels.
To date, BigBand has deployed its SDV products in more than 20 cable systems across North America . Charter, Cox Communications, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision and Comcast are among BigBand’s SDV customers.
Demonstrations will include QualityShaping VBR, a SDV enhancement that can provide up to 50 percent more channel capacity; IPTV over SDV, which utilizes SDV network equipment and management systems for a more cost-effective delivery of video to TVs and PCs via DOCSIS networks; advanced advertising, which will highlight the ability of switched unicast to forward specific ads; and switched video analysis, which allows operators to improve bandwidth efficiency, capacity planning, monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities.
BigBand will be showing off the technologies at Booth #2013, and the company will also present two co-authored white papers at the NCTA Technical Paper conference.
