Alcatel-Lucent, Quantum pair up for mobile TV
By Traci Patterson
CedMagazine.com - May 09, 2008

Alcatel-Lucent and Quantum announced this week that they are setting up a cooperation in the mobile TV market.

The objective of the cooperation, the companies said, is to develop terrestrial or hybrid – terrestrial and satellite – mobile broadcast solutions adhering to the new Digital Video Broadcasting-Satellite services to Handhelds (DVB-SH) mobile broadcast standard.

The collaboration will allow both companies to develop new mobile TV business opportunities related to mobile TV access worldwide on portable media players (PMPs) and automotive digital set-top boxes (STBs).

DVB-SH allows for cost-effective mobile TV deployments . It can be used in any frequency spectrum below 3GHz, including UHF, L band and S band, as well as in terrestrial, satellite or hybrid networks.

“Quantum is dedicated to the future of mobile TV and seamless multimedia mobility,” said Stefano Martini, CEO of Quantum. “Leveraging the power of the open DVB-SH mobile broadcast standard, our new cooperation with Alcatel-Lucent for mass-market mobile TV will allow us to further extend our global leadership in pay-TV digital set-top boxes for the automotive industry, pocket TV portable media players and the software that brings together unique applications through the convergence of mobile TV, the Internet and location-based technologies into a single personal device.”

“In-car multimedia entertainment, portable devices with larger screens and navigation services are key drivers to accelerate the advent of mass-market mobile TV by providing end-users with a mobile TV experience that complements their traditional TV experience,” said Olivier Coste, chairman of Alcatel-Lucent’s mobile broadcast activities. “It is important to have more partners joining the DVB-SH industrial ecosystem. Teaming up for DVB-SH with an innovative player such as Quantum, which already has an extended knowledge of an early adopter broadcast mobile TV market such as Italy, will strengthen the reach of our Unlimited mobile TV solution toward the mass market worldwide.”

Quantum develops multimedia devices and software for the rapidly expanding mobile entertainment market. It has a wide product range that enables service providers and broadcasters to securely deliver the mobile TV and video experience to consumers anytime, anywhere.
