Rogers Communications misses Q4 estimates amid pricing pressure, hikes dividend

Rogers Communications Inc. says its quarterly dividend is going up five per cent and it's prepared to spend up to $500 million to buy back stock from the public market in the coming year. The announcements came as the Toronto-based telecom and media company reported $357 million or 69 cents per share of adjusted earnings below analyst estimates of 75 cents per share.

Cablevision subs gain exclusive access to Fox 5 NY app

Authenticated Cablevision subscribers in the New York area can now tap into the Fox 5 NY app on their iOS and Android devices to access live streams. The app works in the New York tri-state area where WNYW is available. Available programs include “Good Day New York,” “Fox 5 News” at 5, 6, and 10 as well as “Wendy Williams,” “Dr. Oz” and other Fox shows.

Brightcove enables Chromecast app developers to add ads

Using technology from recently acquired Unicorn Media, the company can now enable content providers who are developing apps for Google Chromecast to dynamically insert ads in their content streams. Ads can be delivered on a personalized basis.

Comcast stocks Warner Bros. content in electronic video store

Thanks to a recent agreement, Comcast subscribers can now buy movies and TV shows from Warner Bros. for viewing anywhere and on any device. The Warner Bros. content is the latest addition to Comcast’s Xfinity On Demand electronic video store, which made its debut in November.

The emerging picture of ATSC 3.0 resembles a combination of ATSC 2.0 and DVB-T2, and if that's the case, U.S. broadcasting is looking at a significant chicken-and-egg problem. Consumers will have to buy new TVs, and broadcasters will have to switch to a new broadcasting system, but nobody will make a move unless someone else goes first.

Cable companies all over the world are clearly encouraging the cable equipment vendors to expand to global scale, which should have a salubrious effect on equipment costs. Prior to the development of the RDK, cable companies in Asia, Europe, and The Americas agreed to give up regional differences in DOCSIS in favor of the single approach represented by DOCSIS 3.1.
