FCC clears ‘substantially modified' Verizon AWS deal

The FCC has officially approved Verizon Wireless' AWS deal, sealing a transaction that gives the operator a substantial amount of spectrum for its LTE network. The Commission released its final order clearing the spectrum sale yesterday. The document formalizes a number of Verizon's voluntary commitments around divestitures, network construction and data roaming.

Disney delivers live streaming of channels to Comcast Web portal

Comcast’s programming deal with Walt Disney earlier this year continues to resonate with its customers. Comcast is now offering its authenticated subscribers live shows from Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD on its Xfinity.com/tv Web portal.

Time Warner Cable stirs in live Fox content to TV Everywhere mix

Time Warner Cable announced this morning that it has added live streaming from Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network to its TV Everywhere lineup. The video content is available to Time Warner Cable customers that subscribe to the two channels.

FTC: Dish Network broke telemarketing rules

The Federal Trade Commission filed a suit against Dish Network, charging the satellite-television provider with breaking laws barring telemarketing calls. The FTC said telemarketers from Dish Network kept calling people in an attempt to sell the satellite television service, even after they had been asked to stop.

Comcast agrees to carry new beIN Sport network

The new beIN Sport network has reached an agreement with Comcast to be carried on its Xfinity TV. Owned by the Al-Jazeera Sport Media Network, beIN Sport will be carried in English on the Xfinity TV Sports Entertainment Package and in Spanish on the Xfinity TV MultiLatino Package.

Cox promotes Wolfe to GM of New England/Cleveland market

Cox Communications has promoted long-time employee John Wolfe to senior vice president and general manager of its New England/Cleveland market. In his new role at Cox, Wolfe now oversees the day-to-day operations for the company’s 1,400 employees in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Ohio.

Carlson antenna a big gain for white spaces

Carlson announced a new antenna specifically designed to support the use of white-space spectrum. The company’s new omnidirectional base station antenna provides high gain across the entire UHF spectrum, which will help improve overall performance of white space transmissions.

South Korea's Samsung won a home court ruling in its global smartphone battle against Apple on Friday when judges in Seoul said the company didn't copy the look and feel of the U.S. company's iPhone, and that Apple infringed on Samsung's wireless technology.

Concurrent strikes TV Everywhere deal with J:Com

Concurrent landed a deal with J:Com, which is Japan’s largest cable operator, to help deliver TV Everywhere services to multiple devices. J:Com (Jupiter Communications) has deployed Concurrent’s MediaHawk VX to serve up multi-screen VOD services to mobile devices and PCs.

FCC halts special access deregulation

The FCC has put the brakes on its deregulation of the special access market, services that provide wireless operators with access to critical backhaul for their networks. The Commission voted 3-2 along party lines in favor of temporarily suspending rules that automatically granted requests to change prices on special access services.

Calix to buy Ericsson’s GPON biz

Calix has negotiated to acquire Ericsson’s GPON business. At the same time, the two companies signed a global reseller agreement, under which Calix will become Ericsson’s preferred global partner for broadband access applications. Neither company divulged the value of the deal.

New antenna could vastly increase wireless net capacity

Rice University researchers unveiled a multi-antenna beamforming technology that could help wireless providers keep pace with the voracious demands of data-hungry smartphones and tablets. As a bonus, using the antennas would save on energy. Furthermore, they can be built using mostly off-the-shelf hardware.

Envivio encoder bumps up efficiency

The company claims the latest version of its transcoding software can improve transcoding speed by up to 35 percent. Envivio introduced a new version of its on-demand transcoding software that the company’s own testing indicates an improvement of up to 35 percent in file-to-file transcoding speed, as compared to competing platforms that require hardware acceleration.
