IBM gets into the IPTV delivery business

The development of content delivery networks (CDNs) made it almost inevitable that IP content delivery would become a service, which in turn made it a near certainty that a business services company like IBM would enter the market. IBM has introduced a cloud platform for delivering content on behalf of CE firms.

Elemental sets up video cloud service

The company plans to introduce Elemental Cloud at IBC in Amsterdam. At the same time, it will begin making available Elemental Server Cloud Edition (CE), a file-based solution for high speed, multi-format video conversion in the cloud.

Samsung to rely on Verimatrix security

Samsung will use Verimatrix’s security suite, including its VCAS security system and ViewRight client software, to protect content delivered to its Smart TVs. Video service apps that pay-TV operators build for Samsung Smart TVs will now be able to take advantage of ViewRight client security.

Tokyo court: Samsung didn't infringe Apple patent

A Tokyo court dismissed Apple's claim that Samsung had infringed on its patent. The Japanese court case addressed only the synchronizing technology that allows media players to share data with personal computers and was not comparable in scope to the much larger victory that Apple won in the U.S. last week.

Pac-12 Networks opens coverage without DirecTV

The Pac-12 Networks opened it football coverage with the Utah-Northern Colorado game, with DirecTV subscribers unable to watch because of a distribution stalemate. The network also televised the Arizona State-Northern Arizona game and has exclusive rights to 15 nonconference games and 20 Pac-12 games this season.

Bain-owned cable STB company files for bankruptcy

A cable box repair company owned by the private equity firm Bain Capital is filing for bankruptcy protection, citing weakened demand for its services in recent years. Contec Holdings said it will continue to operate as usual during its Chapter 11 reorganization.

Pace’s software provides quick gateway updates to French provider

France’s Bouygues Telecom is installing Pace’s Helium Unified Gateway Software to enable faster rollouts of new services and apps across a range of gateway devices. Bouygues Telecom will sell Pace’s new Helium software across all of its new BBOX Sensation gateways, as well as legacy devices, in 1.3 million subscriber homes.

TiVo's Q2 loss narrows on DVR subscriber gains

TiVo whittled its losses as more subscribers signed up for the digital video recorders that turned the company into a household name. The results were highlighted by a gain of 230,000 subscribers. That left TiVo with 2.7 million subscribers.

Coming on the heels of a successful trial run at the Olympics, Adobe Systems announced it has upgraded its Adobe Pass platform to its second version. Adobe put Adobe Pass 2.0 through its paces during the recent 2012 London Olympic Games, which served as a milestone for TV Everywhere services.

Unable to reach a deal with DirecTV, Pac-12 Networks has issued an open letter to fans recommending they switch to another television provider. Pac-12 Networks will televise 15 nonconference games and 20 Pac-12 football games this season.

AT&T’s Facebook on TV interactive app lets U-verse subscribers view their news feeds, friends list and photos on their TV screens while they’re watching shows. They can also post updates while viewing and share information about the shows they’re watching with their Facebook friends.

Midcontinent is serving its authenticated customers live streaming sports content from WatchESPN across various devices, and it plans on offering more Disney-related video content. Using the free WatchESPN app, Midcontinent subscribers can view live streaming from ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and ESPNU on their Apple iOS and Android devices.
