Echo resonates across BHN’s footprint

After first deploying the service in Tampa Bay and Central Florida last summer, Bright House Networks has rolled out its “Echo” Wi-Fi offering, which was designed to fill-in Wi-Fi dead spots within a home, across its footprint. The Echo access points are supplied by Actiontec Electronics while Entropic provides the MoCA silicon for both the Arris modems and hotspots.

Close to 90 million D3 CPE units ship over last 12 quarters

With DOCSIS 3.1 gear on the cusp of rollouts, the demand for DOCSOS 3.0 CPE units continues unabated. According to a recent report by Infonetics Research, close to 90 million DOCSIS 3.0 CPE units shipped from the fourth quarter of 2011 to the third quarter of last year. In the most recent third quarter, DOCSIS 3.0 gateway revenue increased 14 percent sequentially.

CES roundup: Dish gives cord-cutters live sports

One of the biggest changes in television this year will be more channels available online with no separate cable or satellite subscription. But for would-be cord-cutters, watching live sports online has been elusive — until now. Dish Network Corp. on Monday unveiled an Internet-only subscription offering that includes ESPN, the cable TV sports network.

CES: TV makers take aim at streaming video

At the International CES gadget show this week in Las Vegas, TV makers unveiled new models with 4K resolution, or four times the clarity offered by today's high definition TVs. They are pushing the features even though not a single TV channel is yet available in 4K. But Internet services such as Netflix, Amazon and M-Go are starting to offer 4K video.

AT&T Digital Life Partners with Samsung, LG, Qualcomm

AT&T today announced new partnerships with Samsung, LG, Qualcomm and Lutron Electronics for its Digital Life smart home platform. New services and third-party product integrations will allow Digital Life subscribers to control connected home features with their smartwatches.

Today in Engineering History: Nixon Launches Space Shuttle Program

In 1972, Nixon signed a bill authorizing $5.5 million in funding to develop a more cost-efficient space shuttle that could be reused on multiple missions. In 1933, construction started on the Golden Gate Bridge. With a 4,200 foot long suspension span, the bridge was the world’s longest suspension bridge at the time, until 1964.

Roku sets plans for 4K streaming

Roku said it has produced a reference design it is licensing to TV manufacturers, who can begin development of Roku TV 4K models of their own. TCL is the first to announce it has licensed the design. Meanwhile Netflix will be the company's  initial 4K content partner.

TWC Sports kicks tires on 4K tests

Time Warner Cable Sports partnered with IMS Productions on two proof-of-concept 4K tests last month. The first test of ultra-high-definition (UHDTV) broadcasting in 4K was a high school football game on Dec. 19 in California while the second took place during a Dec. 23 broadcast of the Los Angeles Lakers vs. the Golden State Warriors at the Staples Center.

TiVo to debut OnePass, partners with iHeartRadio

TiVo announced this morning that it had partnered with iHeartRadio to bring the streaming music service to its Roamio, Mini and Premiere devices. The DVR pioneer also announced it would roll out its “OnePass” feature next month. OnePass was designed to gather and track every episode of a TV series instantly across live or recorded TV, VOD and streaming apps.

FCC to vote in Feb. on net neutrality

Federal regulators are expected to vote next month on rules to govern how Internet service providers like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast deal with the flow of content on their high-speed networks. The five-member Federal Communications Commission will consider then a proposal from Chairman Tom Wheeler on so-called net neutrality rules, agency spokeswoman Kim Hart said Friday.

DVR adoption, on-demand usage keep increasing

By the numbers: Three-quarters of U.S. households have a DVR, or subscribe to Netflix, or use on-demand (VOD) from a cable or Telco provider. A full quarter of households use some combination of two of the services, and one-tenth use all three.

Charter, Nexstar kick off year with new retrans deal

The New Year got off to a positive start with Charter Communications announcing on Thursday that it had reached a new carriage agreement with Nexstar Broadcasting Group. Charter said it had wrapped up the new retransmission agreement with Nexstar prior to the previous one expiring just before midnight on Dec. 31.
