Amazon rolls out 'Netflix-for-books' style service

Amazon is rolling out a new subscription service that will allow unlimited access to thousands of electronic books and audiobooks for $9.99 a month in the online giant's latest effort to attract more users. The largest U.S. e-commerce site said Friday that the Kindle Unlimited service will give users the ability to read as much as they want from more than 600,000 Kindle titles such as "The Hunger Games."

Google's 2Q revenue gains eclipse earnings miss

Google's earnings rose modestly in the second quarter as the Internet company's expensive ambitions devoured most of a surprisingly strong gain in revenue. The report released Thursday also showed that Google's advertising prices are still dropping to extend a nearly three-year slump.

CEO Whitman takes chairman post at Hewlett-Packard

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman is assuming the title of chairman after the departure of interim chairman, Ralph Whitworth, who resigned to deal with health issues. HP has split the roles of chairman and CEO since Mark Hurd resigned as CEO in 2010. The company has faced shareholder displeasure over a series of missteps and slumping sales.

Liberty Global buys a stake in BSkyB’s ITV

Liberty Global announced today that it was buying a 6.4 percent stake in British broadcaster ITV from BSkyB for 481 million pounds, or $824 million. Liberty Global said in its press release that it didn’t intend to make an offer to acquire all of ITV, but reserved the right to do so if circumstances warranted it.

TDS Telecom lights up 1 Gig service in another N.H. town

TDS Telecom has launched its 1 Gigabit service in another town in New Hampshire. The recent deployment in New London followed on the heels of TDS’s first 1 Gbps deployment in Hollis, N.H. in May. The 1 Gig service features 400 Mbps on the upstream.

Fox's bid for Time Warner sparks content merger race

Even though Rupert Murdoch's $76 billion bid for rival media giant Time Warner Inc. has been rejected, that doesn't mean the change sweeping through the TV and film industries will stop any time soon. The cash-and-stock bid by Murdoch's Twenty-First Century Fox Inc. was partly meant to counter consolidation among U.S. TV distributors like Comcast-Time Warner Cable and AT&T-DirecTV.

Microsoft to cut up to 18,000 jobs over next year

Microsoft is cutting up to 18,000 jobs, about 14 percent of its staff, over the next year as it works on integrating the Nokia devices business it bought in April and cut down on management layers. CEO Satya Nadella, who took the job in February, delivered the news to staff in a memo that Microsoft released publicly.

Shaw knocks on CableWiFi door

Shaw Communications has reached out to the CableWiFi alliance to express its interest in becoming a peer to the consortium in Canada. If Shaw gains entry, it would add its 40,000 hotspots, which are spread throughout Western Canada between Victoria and Sault Ste. Marie, to CableWiFi’s more than 250,000 access points that are located across the U.S.

Report: Youth being served by smart energy products

According to a recent report, young consumers are more readily embracing the Internet of Things through smart home devices. Parks Associates’ Internet of Things (IoT) research found that young consumers, those with children, and those in a home for three to four years were leading the adoption of Internet-connected energy devices.

Dish, nTelos expand fixed mobile broadband service

Dish Network and nTelos today announced the expansion of their fixed mobile broadband service in Virginia. The service is now available in parts of Charlottesville, Waynesboro, Staunton, Harrisonburg and Roanoke. The companies are promising 10 Mbps download speeds with the service, which is available for $30 to customers with existing Dish satellite-TV service.

Comcast red faced by customer service rep

Comcast is apologizing after a tech-savvy California customer posted eight minutes of telephone conversation online in which he tried repeatedly to get a customer service representative to disconnect his service. The customer, Ryan Block, succeeds in getting the unidentified Comcast rep to agree to disconnect his service, but only after the rep repeatedly asks Block for a reason.

Sling Media unveils 2 devices for out-of-home TV

Sling Media, the maker of devices that let people watch their cable channels while traveling, is trying to become more relevant in the living room. Traditionally, Sling's strength has been in so-called place shifting. Sling is trying to change that with a model announced Tuesday.

Rejected Fox bid for Time Warner shows growth mood

Though rejected, a surprise bid by Rupert Murdoch's Fox for entertainment rival Time Warner underscores that large media companies are in the mood for major consolidation. Time Warner Inc., which owns the Warner Bros. movie studio and TV channels such as TNT, TBS and HBO, said Wednesday that it rejected the deal and had no interest in further discussions.
