Company turns LED lights into a Wi-Fi network

The company by the fourth quarter plans to begin shipping Li-Flame, a ceiling-mounted unit that can turn an LED light fixture into a multi-user access “atto-cellular” communication system. The Li-Flame moves Visible Light Communication (VLC) past point-to-point and into full wireless network territory, according to a press release.

Ratings whoopsie

Nielsen took another hit in credibility when it announced an unspecified technical error led to incorrect ratings for broadcast networks. Cable companies have been dissatisfied with Nielsen’s technical capabilities for reporting, specifically its delay in figuring out a way to measure multi-screen viewing.

AT&T finishes 1-Gig upgrade in Austin; to offer faster Wi-Fi gateway

AT&T announced this morning that it had completed the free speed upgrade to 1 Gigabit for all of its GigaPower subscribers in Austin. AT&T also said it would be launching a new gateway in Austin that would be “twice as fast as what is generally available today."

Samsung gooses Wi-Fi transmission speeds with 60 GHz

Samsung Electronics said it has enabled a five-fold increase in Wi-Fi data transmission speeds by using the 60 GHz band. Samsung said its 60 GHz Wi-Fi technology enabled data transmission speeds of up to 4.6 Gbps, or 575 MB per second, a five-fold increase from 866 Mbps, or 108 MB per second, which is the maximum speed possible with existing consumer electronics devices.

Shaw opens up hotspots in areas of Calgary where power is down

Shaw Communications is providing free access to non-subscribers on thousands of its Wi-Fi hotspots in downtown Calgary where a power outage occurred over the weekend. According to published reports, a Saturday night fire in an underground electrical vault in the core downtown area of Calgary caused the power outage, which could take four to seven days to fix.

MobiTV announced it is behind the cloud recording capabilities offered by Deutsche Telekom with its multi-screen / TV Everywhere service. MobiTV's network DVR  allows recorded programs to be stored in the cloud and played on any mobile device, anytime, anywhere.

Suddenlink adds UP, Aspire to channel lineup

In the wake of Viacom yanking its 24 networks away from Suddenlink Communications’ subscribers on Oct. 1 after a new carriage agreement wasn’t reached, the nation’s seventh-largest cable operator has added new channels to its lineup. The latest additions to Suddenlink’s channel roster are UP and Aspire.

Verizon to help connect GE's Industrial Internet

General Electric has pulled Verizon into its Industrial Internet orbit, teaming with the telco to allow GE's Internet-enabled machines and devices to connect to Verizon's M2M network and cloud platforms. The two are also exploring the possibility of creating a single global SIM for global connectivity.

TWC updates app to include VOD guide on Roku

Time Warner Cable has blended in a VOD guide on its TWC TV app that runs on Roku’s platform. The Roku platform launched early last with an initial focus on live TV, but the latest update allows those users to see some of Time Warner Cable’s VOD library right from the live TV guide.

Clarity Telecom wraps up deal with WOW!

Clarity Telecom and corporate parent Pamilico Capital announced this week that they had completed their $262 million cash deal to buy broadband systems and assets, which are located in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa from WOW! Clarity said it would transition the platform over from WOW! in the coming months and recast the operation as Vast Broadband.

EU antitrust body OKs Liberty Global's Dutch deal

The European Union's antitrust authority has granted conditional approval to Liberty Global PLC's proposed 10 billion-euro ($13 billion) deal to fully take over Dutch cable operator Ziggo NV. The EU Commission said Friday the acquisition may go ahead provided Liberty sells one pay TV channel and changes its broadcaster contracts to ensure it won't abuse its market position to undermine competition.

Microsoft CEO apologizes for comments on women

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella apologized Thursday night and said he was wrong for saying that women don't need to ask for a raise and should just trust the system to pay them well. Nadella was blasted on Twitter and in blog posts for his comments, which were made earlier Thursday at an event for women in computing.

TWC shareholders OK deal with Comcast; FCC proposes review compromise

Time Warner Cable shareholders have approved the company’s takeover by Comcast. Meanwhile, the FCC suggested a compromise with the companies that would encourage them to hand over documents the Commission wants for its review of the acquisition.

Time Warner Cable has developed an upgrade to its WiFi Finder and My TWC apps that makes connections to its TWCWiFi-Passpoint enabled hotspots more seamless. With the update, Time Warner Cable subscribers sitting at home can now access upgraded versions of the apps that proactively prompt users, both current and new, to create and save TWCWiFi-Passpoint enabled Wi-Fi profiles on their Android and iOS devices.
