Comcast has integrated Common Sense Media ratings and reviews into its next gen X1 platform. Comcast had previously blended Common Sense Media’s parental control features into its Xfinity TV Go website. The ratings were based on developmental guidelines from some of the nation’s leading authorities,
Turner Broadcasting, the parent of the CNN, TBS and TNT networks, is eliminating about 1,475 jobs, or about 10 percent of its total employees. Monday's announcement follows an offer of voluntary buyouts to 600 veteran employees in August, part of an overall cost-cutting effort at the Atlanta-based broadcasting company founded by Ted Turner.
Cox Communications is following through on its 1-Gigabit announcement from earlier this year with Monday’s news that a 1-Gig residential service will launch in Phoenix later this month. The service, which has the brand name “G1GABLAST,” costs $69.99 a month when bundled with other Cox offerings.
The NBA has extended its television deals with ESPN and TNT for nine years. The contract with ESPN may have a provision that will allow the channel to distribute out-of-market games on the web, outside its typical cable-channel basketball package, and in competition with the NBA’s own League Pass.
Verizon and Outerwall’s Redbox announced over the weekend that they would be pulling the plug on the Redbox Instant streaming video service on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The two companies said the service, which tied the Redbox DVD rental kiosk business with streaming video capabilities from Verizon, wasn’t as profitable as they had hoped it would be.
Alaska’s GCI announced that Fairbanks would be joining Juneau and Anchorage as cities that were slated for its 1-Gigabit service. With the same deployment timeframe as last week’s Juneau announcement, the 1-Gig service, which is called “fiber re:D,” will be up and running near the end of 2016.
Sprint Corp., the nation's third-biggest cellphone carrier, said it is cutting an unspecified number of jobs this month to reduce costs as it tries to better compete with AT&T and Verizon, and hinted that more layoffs are possible. Sprint said Friday in a regulatory filing that it will book a $160 million charge in its fiscal second quarter to cover this round of layoffs, which will largely be completed this month.

Jouari Santiago, formerly with Shaw Communications, has joined the company as director of sales for Latin America.
This week Shaw Communications added apps from Sportsnet Now and TSN Go to its roster of TV Everywhere programming. TSN Go is now available on iOS and Android devices to Shaw Cable and Shaw Direct video subscribers. TSN Go gives authenticated subscribers the ability to access TSN's recently expanded suite of feeds to watch live and on-demand sports content for free with their subscription to TSN.
BabyFirst, which is a TV channel targeted at toddlers and their parents, announced today that it had launched on Suddenlink, the nation’s seventh-largest cable operator. BabyFirst’s programming is now available to nearly all of Suddenlink’s 1.4 million video subscribers.

Windstream plans to begin providing residential TV service in Lincoln starting next year. It will be delivered using Ericsson’s Mediaroom platform, and it will be available bundled with Internet and phone service. The company said the service will be available to about 50,000 homes.
Sandvine announced it had received approximately $7 million in orders from two Tier 1 cable operators in North America. Sandvine declined to name the cable operators, but said one was from an existing customer while the other was a “competitive displacement" of a standalone vendor.

The widespread adoption of smartphones and tablets, as will as Apple's Siri, has led to a renewed interest in this genre of technology.
Dish has signed agreements with Northstar Wireless and SNR Wireless, two companies in which it has indirect ownership, to bid on AWS-3 spectrum. AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon will also bid. Sprint will not participate in this auction, but instead save its strength for next year’s Incentive Auctions.
