NCAA semis on TNT draws millions of viewers

The Final Four broadcasts on TNT on Saturday drew millions of viewers, even though the main coverage was on TBS. Were the new "TeamCasts" that popular? Or did some viewers never realize — or not care — that they weren't watching the regular telecast? Turner Sports executive Christina Miller suspects it's all of the above.

Cablevision says CEO James Dolan is giving up his title as president of the company, and it promoted two long-time executives. Cablevision says Brian Sweeney will replace James Dolan as president of the company, and it named Kristin Dolan chief operating officer.

Charter Spectrum makes North Texas debut

Charter Communications’ “Charter Spectrum” brand has made its debut in North Texas with increased data speeds and more than 200 HD channels. The simultaneous launches in the Forth Worth area and in Greenville, S.C. marked the first time that Charter used the new brand.

Comcast tops 1 million Wi-Fi mark; increases data speeds in NE

Comcast announced this morning that it had topped the 1 million threshold for hot spots deployed across the nation and that it was increasing some data speeds in its Northeast footprint. The two announcements were choreographed to coincide with Comcast and Time Warner Cable executives appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee today in regards to the deal between the two companies.

RCN Business scores MEF Carrier Ethernet 2.0 certification

The Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) recently granted its Carrier Ethernet 2.0 certification to RCN Business. RCN Business achieved Carrier Ethernet 2.0 certification (CE 2.0) for its E-Line, E-LAN and E-Access services. Carriers that have achieved CE 2.0 certification are recognized for their ability to deliver Ethernet services at a higher quality and reliability than non-certified services.

Comcast argues benefits of Time Warner Cable deal

Comcast Corp. on Tuesday presented its case to government regulators arguing that its $45 billion takeover of Time Warner Cable Inc. will benefit consumers without limiting competition.nThe company filed hundreds of pages of documents with the Federal Communications Commission after filing a notice Monday with the Justice Department.

Weather Channel cuts reality shows in DirecTV deal

The Weather Channel is returning to DirecTV with a significant compromise that affects all of its viewers: it promises to focus more on the weather. After a three-month dispute with DirecTV that saw the channel dropped to some 20 million U.S. viewers, the two sides came to a new deal that will restore service on Wednesday.

Passwords, other data exposed to potential theft by security flaw

An alarming lapse in Internet security has exposed millions of passwords, credit card numbers and other sensitive bits of information to potential theft by computer hackers who may have been secretly exploiting the problem before its discovery. The breakdown revealed this week affects the encryption technology that is supposed to protect online accounts for emails, instant messaging and a wide range of electronic commerce.

Physicist wins $1.3M tech prize for data storage

British-American physicist Stuart Parkin has won the 1 million-euro ($1.3 million) Millennium Technology Prize for discoveries leading to a thousand-fold increase in digital data storage on magnetic disks. His discoveries enabled cloud services and the online distribution of social networks, music and film.

Charter TV App goes live on iOS, Android and Kindle devices

Today Charter Communications launched its Charter TV App, which provisions 130 live TV channels inside of subscribers’ homes. The app is now available for free downloading from Apple iTunes App Store, Amazon App store and Android Apps on Google Play.

Game on: Comcast, TWC file deal with FCC

This morning Time Warner Cable and Comcast filed their applications and public interest statement with the Federal Communications Commission. Today’s FCC filing isn’t the first salvo in Comcast’s $45 billion bid to take over Time Warner Cable—last week both companies filed a Hart-Scott-Rodino notification with the Department of Justice, but it provides a game plan for answering critics’ concerns over the deal.

The Comcast AdDelivery service, which is part of Comcast Wholesale’s suite of services, has teamed up with Adstream to offer a global ad delivery platform. The two companies said the combined platform would provide advertisers a fast, efficient and reliable method for managing and distributing video assets over an international ad delivery network.

Pace hires former cable operator exec Henderson

Pace announced that it has hired Jim Henderson as president of its Pace International business unit. Henderson, who replaced Shane McCarthy, is now responsible for Pace’s International business in EMEA and APAC. As president, he will lead a team of over 500 people, delivering revenues of around $800 million.

Nokia gets Chinese approval for Microsoft deal

Nokia has received regulatory approval from Chinese authorities to sell its mobile phone unit to Microsoft Corp., removing one of the last major hurdles to the 5.4 billion-euro ($7.3 billion) deal. The Finnish company says it expects the transaction to close by the end of the month, having acquired the necessary approvals from regulatory bodies including in the U.S., the European Union and other jurisdictions.
