Adobe extends reach of Primetime DRM

Adobe announced its Primetime DRM is now available across apps on connected devices, including set top boxes, and via HTML5 on major web browsers. The company said it has collaborated with Intel, Broadcom and AMD to enable hardware-based DRM that protects HD and Ultra HD content.

Gainspeed hires former Harmonic exec as CEO

Gainspeed has brought onKrish Padmanabhan as its CEO. Prior to Gainspeed, Padmanabhan was senior vice president of products and solutions at Harmonic, where he oversaw overall strategy for its video playout and compression portfolio. He replaces Drew Perkins,  a co-founder of the company.

SCTE bolsters international presence

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers has broadened its reach abroad with the recent addition of Liberty Global to SCTE’s Corporate Alliance Program (CAP) as well as the formation of an international-based training program. The training and certfication program is called the International Society of Broadband Experts (ISBE), which will serve as an international gateway to the SCTE’s library of resources.

If bigger is truly better then TiVo has the consumer DVR market cornered with its new “Mega” model. The six-tuner TiVo Mega has a mind-boggling 24 terabytes of storage, which is the equivalent of over 26,000 hours of SD storage space and 4,000 hours of HD space.

Microsoft is giving its MSN news service a crisper look, new lifestyle tools and seamless syncing across devices. The company says the revamped site fits in with Microsoft's overall strategy of making mobile phones and Internet-based services priorities as its traditional businesses — Windows and Office software installed on desktops — slow down or decline.

RFMD steps closer to TriQuint merger

RFMD shareholders voted to approve the merger agreement and to approve the compensation arrangements for RFMD's named executive officers in connection with the transaction. TriQuint's stockholders are scheduled to vote on the merger agreement and other matters at a special meeting to be held later today.

AT&T lines up apps for connected cars

AT&T said it has attracted a half-dozen developers to AT&T Drive, the company’s program to support the adaptation of mobile apps for use in connected vehicles. AT&T set up the program to give automakers a selection of services and capabilities to include in their connected vehicles.

Casa reels in another deal from TVCable

TVCable Ecuador picked CMTS and CCAP vendor Casa Systems to provision its platform for a six-city expansion project. TVCable had previously teamed up with Casa on a first phase expansion across eight cities within its footprint. Miami-based Cable Network Associates helped Casa land the deal with TVCable.

Ciena beats Street 3Q forecasts

Ciena Corp. on Thursday reported profit of $16.2 million in its fiscal third quarter. The Hanover, Maryland-based company said it had profit of 15 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for amortization costs and stock option expense, came to 32 cents per share. The results beat Wall Street expectations.

Google settles with FTC over in-app charges

Google has agreed to pay full refunds totaling at least $19 million to consumers who were charged for purchases that children made via apps without parental consent from the Google Play app store. The settlement is part of the third case by the Federal Trade Commission about unauthorized in-app purchases made by children. It settled with Apple for $32.5 million in January.

FCC chair makes firmest case yet that broadband competition is lacking

FCC chairman Tom Wheeler yesterday stated flatly that in too much of the U.S., there is no meaningful broadband competition, and that competitors are lagging behind public need. If enough people accept his propositions, Wheeler would then be able to justify reclassifying broadband as a communications service.
