Centerbridge drops LightSquared offer, clearing way for Dish

With the Centerbridge bid out of the way, the path is again open for Dish Network and the $2.2 billion stalking-horse bid it entered in LightSquared’s bankruptcy proceedings. Dish is pursuing LightSquared for access to its 35 MHz of spectrum licenses in the 1500 L band.

Just in time for the holidays, Time Warner Cable has added support for Kindle tablets on its TWC TV app, and updated some features across Roku, Xbox and Samsung devices. The TWC TV app now works with Kindle Fire HD and HDX tablets for Time Warner Cable customers that subscribe to its “standard” or “preferred” video tiers.

Cox Communications is the latest cable operator to sign up to carry international sports programming from beIN Sports. Starting today, Cox subscribers in Northern Virginia can tune in to beIN Sport and beIN Sport en Espanol. Later this month, the TV Everywhere live event broadband service, beIN Sport Play, will be available to Cox’s authenticated subscribers.

Obama meets with tech CEOs amid NSA concerns

President Barack Obama on Tuesday discussed the federal health care website, government surveillance and other issues with executives from Google, Twitter, Apple, Comcast, and several other leading technology companies. The White House said the meeting was focused on the administration's efforts to repair the HealthCare.gov website, but National Security Agency surveillance programs also were on the agenda.

Sprint, Dish Network partner on fixed mobile broadband

The service trial will kick off by middle of 2014 and will be limited to Corpus Christi, Tex., initially. Dish will be installing either outdoor routers or indoor units for customers who want to take advantage of the TDD-LTE airwaves riding on Sprint’s 2.5 GHz spectrum. The companies plan to expand into other markets after that.

Japan MSO improves OTT delivery with Qwilt

Cable Television Toyama, a cable network operator in Japan, is claiming it has improved caching efficiency for over the top (OTT) video by nearly 50 percent, with a 2x improvement in quality of experience (QoE) for its subscribers, using technology from Qwilt.

San Francisco begins offering free public Wi-Fi

Ruckus Wireless donated some of the Wi-Fi hardware, while Layer42 Networks donated access to its gigabit backbone. Ruckus estimates that this is now the single most extensive municipal Wi-Fi network in the U.S., and San Francisco has plans to expand access from along Market Street to other public areas.

Comcast hires former Goldman Sachs exec as SVP, investor relations

Comcast announced that former Goldman Sachs executive Jason Armstrong has joined the company as senior vice president, investor relations. Armstrong took over the position that was vacated by Marlene Dooner, who was recently appointed to the newly created role of executive vice president, Hispanic enterprises and content for NBCUniversal.

Comcast Business has expanded its Upware roster to include marketing and CRM vendor Swiftpage. Upware is divided into various “aisles” among cloud-based vendors that Comcast Business has picked to serve the small and medium-sized business sector, and Swiftpage was the first addition to the marketing and CRM aisle.
