Active Broadband takes network management up a level

The company’s Dynamic Broadband Service Manager (DBSM) can now operate as a software-defined networking (SDN) controller, pulling management of the network up the OSI stack.  Active Broadband Networks has expanded the capabilities of its service management system to provide common control and active management of broadband services across different types of access networks, including cable, DSL, FTTH and WiFi.

Synnex joins Comcast Business Solutions Provider Program

Comcast Business announced that Synnex, a nationwide distributor of IT products and services, has joined its Solutions Providers Program as the first distributor to serve as a master agent. Synnex, which serves thousands of value added resellers (VARs) across the country, offers Comcast Business’ full line of Ethernet, Internet, voice, cloud and video services.

Report: Cable operators make headway on Ethernet

Cable operators had a strong showing on Vertical System Group’s recent mid-year Ethernet Leaderboard. Cable MSOs now comprise 20 percent of the total Ethernet port base in the United States while Incumbent Carrier segment remained the largest with 47 percent, followed by the Competitive Provider segment’s 33 percent.

Facebook aims to get more people online

Facebook wants to get more of the world's more than 7 billion people — all of them, actually — online through a partnership with some of the world's largest mobile technology companies. Facebook Inc. announced a partnership called Internet.org on Wednesday. In addition to the world's biggest online social network, the group also includes Korean electronics giant Samsung, Finnish handset maker Nokia and wireless chip maker Qualcomm Inc.

Netflix strikes movie deal with Weinstein Co.

The multi-year agreement announced Tuesday builds upon a partnership that Netflix Inc. forged with Weinstein Co. last year. That deal gave it the streaming rights to the Oscar-winning film, "The Artist," as well other foreign films and documentaries from the 8-year-old studio.

The cloud is being sold as the greatest innovation since the food industry started building zip-lock technology into the packages of everything from hot dogs to shredded cheese, but there have been concerns: can cloud computing scale to cover hundreds of thousands of subscribers, and aren’t you just courting trouble by automatically building in too much delay? But the world is safe for the cloud, according to ActiveVideo.

Cox Business scores deal with Las Vegas Convention Center

Cox Business has won a seven-year contract to provide voice, video and data services to the Las Vegas Convention Center and Cashman Center. The deal covers 3.3 million square feet of meeting and exhibit space across Las Vegas. Cox will start providing its services to some of the conventions and special events this fall.

TiVo refreshes lineup with 6-tuner Roamio DVRs

TiVo Inc. announced a new line of digital video recorders Tuesday to give television viewers more control over what they watch on traditional channels and over the Internet. The fifth-generation DVRs from the company that pioneered the devices come as consumers have a growing number of choices for finding and watching TV shows and movies.

FourthWall Media signs deal with Republican analytics group

Optimus, a Republican data management organization, has signed an agreement with FourthWall Media to access the latter’s cable set-top box viewing data. FourthWall said its viewership data could aid political analysts firms, such as Optimus, in identifying voter segments and targeting messages to the correct homes for maximum efficiency and effectiveness.

AT&T to expand Digital Life to 6 more markets

The company is scheduled to launch its Digital Life service in several more markets on Friday. They are Orlando, Providence, Virginia Beach, Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse. With these six cities, AT&T Digital Life, the company’s home management service, will be available in 39 U.S. markets. The company has a target of 50 markets by the end of this year.

Time Warner Cable partners with NYC Media Lab

The cable operator has pledged to contribute $1.6 million to the 2-year-old NYC Media Lab. Initially, TWC is specifically funding research at the organization into bandwidth usage trends. The NYC Media Lab was launched in 2010 by New York City Economic Development Corp. (NYCEDC), with participation of three major city universities.

Study: Tight race between Huawei, Cisco, Ericsson

Telecommunications vendors Cisco, Huawei and Ericsson were neck and neck on Infonetics Research’s equipment vendor leadership scorecard. While each vendor had different strengths, Huawei was ranked first on the scorecard, followed closely by Ericsson and Cisco.

Report: Fiber-based broadband to hit 19% of market share

Worldwide fixed-line broadband subscriptions will continue to grow at a healthy clip this year. According to a report by ABI Research, fiber-optic broadband share will grow to 19 percent by the end of this year, up from 16 percent last year.

Al-Jazeera America prepares for Tuesday launch

The Qatar-based news organization will finally establish a firm foothold on American television Tuesday after a decade of trying. At 3 p.m. EDT, Al Gore's former Current TV will turn out the lights in more than 45 million TV homes, replaced by the new U.S. affiliate of Al-Jazeera.

TV models that have lasted decades are nowhere near dead, but they are definitely beginning to fray around the edges. Viacom is ready to have some of its most popular channels, including Nickelodeon and MTV be carried by an over-the-top provider – Sony.
