Time Warner, CBS reach accommodation, end blackout

The companies were in dispute over how much Time Warner Cable Inc. would pay for CBS Corp. programming. Terms of the deal haven't been disclosed. The agreement includes retransmission fees the cable operator pays to CBS per subscriber, which had been a sticking point.

CCAP seeps into CMTS market

The first CCAP deployments are reported underway, with initial installations consisting largely of denser CMTS and QAM equipment. Cisco and Arris have established themselves as the frontrunners in the CMTS market, but competition is intensifying as vendors vie for share ahead of potential CCAP deployments.

Transparent caching catching on

Transparent caching is essentially edge caching, ultimately on behalf of OTT providers.  Several companies have solutions in which they cut deals with either the MVPDs or with the CDNs to do transparent caching. The amount of equipment that needs to be added can be minimized, and the improvement in quality of service (QoS) ultimately benefits everyone all up and down the value chain.

Enterprise router market shows signs of life

The global enterprise router market saw a surge revenue in the most recent second quarter, but it’s too early to say whether the turnaround was complete. According to a report by Infonetics Research, the global enterprise router market totaled $945 million in the second quarter, up 12 percent from the first quarter, and up 6 percent from the same quarter a year ago.

The college football season kicks off this week and most of Charter Communications’ subscribers will now be able to keep track of the all the action with ESPN Goal Line. Authenticated Charter customers that subscribe to the cable operator’s Sports Tier and Digi Tier 2 packages can access ESPN Goal Line, as well as ESPN Buzzer Beater when the college hoops season tips off, in HD.

AT&T adds more TVE options for Longhorn Network

AT&T and ESPN announced that AT&T subscribers can now access the Longhorn Network’s live video content online and on their iPhone and iPod touch devices. AT&T customers that have the Longhorn Network as part of their video package can authenticate themselves with their member IDs and passwords.

SMC gateways bond 16 channels for 800 MHz

SMC Networks will be using MaxLinear’s digital receivers for a line of DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems and gateways, including a new 16x4 cable gateway family. In full 16-channel receive mode of operation, the receiver provides up to 800Mbps downstream speeds and consumes less than 110 mW per channel.

Valley Tech offers to buy Alvarion for about $5.8M

The court-appointed receiver responsible for Alvarion is recommending a sale of the company for about $5.8 million in total, to Valley Telecom, which provides telecommunications services to an international clientele. The deal would be contingent upon approval of a plan to compensate Alvarion’s creditors.

TiVo’s Roamio DVRs cue up Opera

TiVo’s new Roamio line of DVRs will feature a range of HTML5-based apps thanks to a new partnership with Opera Software. With the partnership, TiVo’s Roamio users can blend in HTML5 apps from the Opera TV Store while reaping the fruits of developers that take part in Opera’s SDK effort.

Frontier part of 1 Gbps build in Illinois

Frontier Communications will take part in the build out of a $1.5 million 1 Gbps network in Southern Illinois. The network, which was announced by Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, will serve residents, businesses and institutions, and is partnership between the city of Carbondale, Southern Illinois University and Connect SI.

Vodafone in talks to sell Verizon Wireless stake

Britain's Vodafone PLC, one of the world's largest cellphone companies, confirmed Thursday that it was talking to Verizon Communications about selling its U.S. operations. The U.K. company is mulling its options for its 45 percent stake in the U.S.'s Verizon Wireless, of which Verizon Communications owns the other 55 percent.

 This paper describes an architecture that serves as a deterrent to piracy of high-value video content delivered on-demand to devices using adaptive HTTP streaming. The system works by uniquely altering, or watermarking, video delivered to each viewer in such a way that it is visually imperceptible, persistent though video processing (such as re-encoding or re-capturing via a camera pointing at a screen), and detectable through special forensic techniques. The alterations in the video store information uniquely identify the user to which the video was served, so that if the video is pirated and distributed, it is possible to identify the pirating customer.

Beijing Gehua CATV Network has deployed the company's equipment. Beijing Gehua is a Tier 1 operator that builds, manages, and maintains cable TV networks. Its network consists of the city's 16 districts and counties. It has approximately 4.98 million registered users.

Invitel uses RGB gear to enable transition to MPEG-4

Invitel, a fixed line telecommunications and broadband Internet services provider (ISP) in Hungary, has selected and deployed RGB’s Video Multiprocessing Gateway (VMG) to help the company transition its line-up of HD programming from MPEG-2 to the more bandwidth-efficient MPEG-4/H.264 compression format.

Game on: TWC offers 300 live channels on Xbox

As promised, Time Warner Cable is now delivering 300 live channels to its subscribers over Xbox gaming consoles. Time Warner Cable first announced in June that it would be adding the Xbox to its list of TV Everywhere devices. The service is delivered over Time Warner Cable’s separate IP network via the cable operator’s My TWC TV app.
