Videotron is serving up a new Wi-Fi router that supports 802.11ac and 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless networks simultaneously. The router was developed exclusively for Videotron in partnership with ZyXEL. Videotron said that supporting 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless networks limited interference and lag.
French broadcaster TDF is using Envivio’s 4K Ultra HD compression technology for live streaming of the French Open 2014 tennis championship to compatible 4K TV sets in France. Envivio is enabling transmission of 4K using HEVC compression, at 50 frames per second.
Amdocs is now combining its TeraScale, Proactive Care and BI and Data Warehousing Services, and adding network optimization expertise it picked up with two recent acquisitions, Actix and Celcite. The combination positions Amdocs to collect and process the flow of data that service providers generate to help them improve the customer experience.
The town of Rock Hill, S.C., is working with Comporium to upgrade the area’s communications network to support data rates up to 1 Gbps. Comporium will deploy networking equipment from Adtran to create the service. Multi-screen video vendor Vubiquity announced this morning that it was buying UK-based FilmFlex, the latter of which is one of the largest white label VOD and multiplatform providers outside of the United States. Prior to the purchase, FilmFlex was a joint venture between Sony Pictures Television and The Walt Disney Company.
Virgin Media Business partnered with vendor Siklu for a small cell trial in Leeds, which is the third-largest city in the United Kingdom. To showcase the ease of the installs, Siklu’s radios were installed on various types of light poles by technicians that didn’t have any telecommunications experience.
Vyve Broadband has teamed up with Level 3 and Alianza for its VoIP service. Vyve picked Alianza’s turnkey wholesale VoIP platform, the latter of which is part of Level 3’s Carrier Cloud Voice Solution. A federal appeals court is rejecting challenges to the FCC's plan to expand broadband Internet service to rural areas. The expansion is funded partly by fees paid by telecommunications companies. Many of those companies contended the FCC did not have the authority to use the money for Internet service.

Time Warner Cable has launched a new online customer portal that will enable its customers to connect automatically to Wi-Fi hotspots. TWC customers go to the new portal and register their Wi-Fi enabled devices. After that, they will automatically be signed in to any Wi-Fi hotspot operated by TWC or its cable affiliates.
Bolt Fiber Optic Services has contracted with Alcatel-Lucent to install GPON for triple-play service delivery. The 1 gigabit service will begin in the fourth quarter of 2014 and is scheduled for completion by April, 2017. A-L is acting as system integrator; the network will include A-L GPON equipment.
F6 Networks is using Ciena’s packet optical and packet networking gear to provision a dark fiber network that it’s building between Atlantic Canada and the northeastern United States. The 100-gigabit network will be used by public sector organizations, private enterprises, Internet services providers and wireless carriers.
Comcast CEO Brian Roberts was among the nation’s highest-paid CEOs last year, according to recent research by the Associated Press and executive pay research firm Equilar. Ranked 10th overall, Roberts pulled down $31.4 million last year, which was up 8 percent from the previous year.
The total wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) equipment market grew 12 percent in the trailing four quarter period that ended with the most recent first quarter, according to a new report by Dell’Oro Group. Huawei, Ciena, Alcatel-Lucent and ZTE were ranked first through fourth in total WDM equipment market sales.
