GetGlue sticks to Dish’s iPad app

Dish Network has blended in social media features from GetGlue into its Dish Explorer app. With GetGlue, Dish subscribers are now able to check-in and connect with their favorite TV shows, movies and sporting events on their iPads via the app.

A new device from Google makes it easy to stream video from several popular services to a high-definition TV. Chromecast is tiny enough to dangle from a keychain when not in use, but it packs a big punch for a low price. At merely $35, Chromecast is irresistible. Using your home Wi-Fi network, it streams some of your favorite shows from some of your favorite services, including Netflix and Google's YouTube.

Time Warner's Q2 defined by ARPU strategy

Time Warner Cable’s Q2 earnings rose 6 percent, helped by higher revenue from business services and residential broadband. The company had a net loss of both basic video and phone customers, a result of the company has been deliberately targeting customers who provide “higher ARPU, higher profit and lower churn, even if that means fewer connects.”

DirecTV shares down on weak 2Q subscriber numbers

hares of DirecTV retreated Thursday after the country's No. 1 provider of satellite TV services reported weak subscriber figures, both in the U.S. and Latin America. DirecTV lost 84,000 U.S. subscribers during the quarter, the worst result ever. After more than a decade of heady growth, the U.S. satellite TV industry has slowed nearly to a standstill.

TWC’s all-digital migration takes Manhattan

Yesterday Time Warner Cable started transitioning analog channels in its basic TV tier in Manhattan to an all-digital signal. Time Warner Cable’s all-digital conversion project will roll into Brooklyn and Queens later this year. In June, the nation’s second-largest cable operator cut over to all-digital in Mount Vernon and Staten Island in New York and Bergen, N.J.

Cox Virginia promotes three employees

Cox Communications recently named Bob Latvis as vice president of field operations, Jim Ruel as vice president of outside plant, maintenance and construction and Toni Stubbs as vice president of engineering and operations for Cox Virginia.As new members of Cox Virginia’s senior executive team, Latvis, Ruel and Stubbs are based out of the Hampton Roads office in Chesapeake.

CBS 2Q beats Street as TWC beef goes on

CBS Corp. said Wednesday that net income rose 11 percent in the latest quarter, beating the expectations of analysts as the company continues to benefit from the types of fees that are at the center of a dispute with Time Warner Cable.  CBS CEO Leslie Moonves told investors on a conference call that the company remained resolute in its negotiations with Time Warner Cable.

Netflix rolls out new tool to profile viewers

Netflix is introducing a long-awaited feature that will make it easier for the Internet video service to track and analyze the viewing habits of people sharing the same $8-per-month account. The tool coming out Thursday can splinter a single Netflix account into up to five different profiles at no additional charge.

AT&T starts rolling out 45 Mbps U-verse tier

AT&T this week initiated a 45 Mbps speed tier for U-verse broadband customers in California and in Nevada. AT&T said it will make the new 45 Mbps downstream / 6 Mbps upstream tier, called U-verse Power,  in additional market on an ongoing basis.

Incognito Software just released data that pretty much settles the “over-the-top: friend or foe?” debate, at least in North America. OTT is has widely come to be seen as an opportunity, and MVPDs are actively preparing for it. Part of that preparation is learning how to deliberately collect, store, and analyze IPDR data.

NBCUniversal, data increase Comcast’s Q2 bottom line

Comcast’s decision to buy into, and then buy all of, NBCUniversal is now paying off in spades as the nation’s largest cable operator reported a 28.6 percent increase in earnings in the second quarter. Broadband continued to chip in on Comcast’s bottom line with the addition of 187,000 new subscribers in the quarter.

TWC tunes up app for Samsung TVs

Time Warner Cable subscribers with certain models of Samsung Smart TVs are now able to watch more than 5,000 TV shows and movies on demand with content from over 94 providers. After announcing last month it was going to provision TV services to 2012 and 2013 Samsung Smart TVs, Time Warner Cable kick started the service on its TWC TV app yesterday.

Starbucks to partner with Google on Wi-Fi upgrade

Starbucks says it's reached a deal to partner with Google that will allow it to offer its customers dramatically faster Wi-Fi service. . Starting in August, new U.S. company-operated Starbucks stores will begin to receive up to 10 times faster network and Wi-Fi speeds.

Sprint Records $1.6B Loss in Wake of iDEN Shutdown

Sprint on Tuesday unveiled second quarter earnings that showed record revenues of $8.8 billion, but the company couldn't stop the bleeding that has resulted from the shuttering of its Nextel iDEN network. While Sprint said it has managed to migrate 4 million iDEN subscribers over to the Sprint platform, the June 30th closing of the push-to-talk network contributed heavily to a $1.6 billion loss.
