TWC blackout having little impact on CBS

A business dispute that has taken CBS off the air in portions of Dallas, Los Angeles and New York has done little to put a dent in the network's ratings dominance. CBS was easily the nation's most popular network last week, the Nielsen ratings company said.

After Cablevision, Time Warner Cable, TiVo and YouTube all separately announced that they would be receiving technical Emmys, the The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences released the full list of recipients of the awards.

Azuki turns LG Stick into service provider "set-top"

Azuki Systems said it has integrated its Azuki Media Platform with the new Android Stick IP set-top box from LG Electronics. The combination is designed to enable service providers to deliver a broadband HDTV service experience on any TV in the home, without requiring a traditional set-top box and the cost and inconvenience of a truck roll.

Despite subscriber losses, Suddenlink’s revenues grow 5.6% in Q2

Suddenlink Communications saw subscriber defections from both its video and data services, but still managed to post second quarter revenues that were higher than the same quarter a year ago. Suddenlink, the nation’s seventh-largest cable operator, reported second quarter revenues of $554.0 million this morning, which were a 5.6 percent increase over the same quarter a year ago.

Comcast Business signs colocation deal with Cologix

Cologix announced today that Comcast Business has signed up to use its data center in downtown Minneapolis in order to better prevision its business services portfolio. The deal makes Comcast Business a preferred partner with Cologix and helps the cable operator’s business unit support its enterprise customers’ colocation needs.

Comcast expands Internet Essentials, ups speed

Comcast Corp., the nation's largest cable company, is expanding the number of low-income families that can automatically qualify for its $9.95-per-month Internet access. It's also boosting download speeds on the service to 5 megabytes per second from 3 Mbps to attract more subscribers.

CableLabs pulls in Euro Cable Labs, goes global

CableLabs has taken over Euro Cable Labs, with nine European cable operators becoming members of the consortium; a smaller handful of companies from both Asia and Latin America have also become members. All members have agreed to standardize on a common version of the still-developing DOCSIS 3.1.

Ensequence continues to expand its executive suite with the addition of Gary Perrelli as senior vice president, interactive sales – content providers. Most recently, Perrelli had been a VP  for the Disney and ESPN Media Networks. Earlier he had stints with ESPN, AT&T Broadband, and Cox Communications.

Time Warner Cable scores a pair of technical Emmys

TiVo nabs Emmy; launches Pace gateway with GCI

DVR pioneer TiVo has snagged an Emmy and also announced that Alaska-based GCI was the first North American cable operator to deploy Pace’s XGI gateway on its user interface platform. The Emmy honored TiVo’s whole-home platform, which includes the TiVo Premiere DVR, TiVo Mini and TiVo Stream

Study: Comcast’s hotspots top AT&T, Boingo

According to a recent study by Allion USA, Comcast’s public hotspots were faster than AT&T and Boingo Wireless’ hotspots by a significant margin. The study across four cities found that Comcast’s Xfinity WiFi hotspots had faster download speeds an up to three times faster upload speeds.

Google Glass could be peek at tech future

Google Inc. is touting Glass as a liberating breakthrough that will make technology more convenient and less obnoxious in social situations than checking a smartphone to see what's happening in your digital realm. Critics deride Glass as another disturbing example of a how enslaved people are to their devices and a sign that technology is obliterating personal privacy.

AMC's Q2 income triples with Dish payment

AMC Networks saw net income more than triple during the second quarter thanks to a $132.9 million payment from a dispute with Dish Network. Removing one-time items like that, however, the company fell short of Wall Street profit and revenue expectations and its stock slid 5 percent Thursday.

KT shifts to interface based on HTML5

KT is preparing to launch an HTML5-based IPTV service accessible from both set-top boxes and user devices such as PC’s, smartphones, and tablets. The service will be called Olleh TV Smart. Notice of the announcement came from Alticast, which provides the middleware for KT’s IPTV system.

Euclid Discoveries touting boost to MPEG-2

Euclid Discoveries is shopping a software modification that it has demonstrated makes MPEG-2 encoding anywhere from 10 percent to 30 percent more efficient. Euclid has refined predictive techniques to get beyond the macroblock level, instead employing a means to identify and model objects in the video frame.
