With the advertising upfront season looming, TiVo released a report this morning that said the top-10 “season pass” programs lost $88 million in ad revenue due to the current C3 ratings system. By switching to C7, which would provide commercial ratings for live viewing plus an additional seven days instead of three, ratings and revenue would increase by 5 percent to 17 percent, according to TiVo.
Alticast will be showing a range of technologies at The Cable Show next week that address the increased demand for personalized video services. In the first deal since it completed the Motorola Home acquisition a year ago, Arris announced Friday that it had bought SeaWell Networks for an undisclosed sum. Arris said it would be integrating SeaWell’s adaptive bit rate (ABR) technology and “talent” into its Network & Cloud business.
The FCC plans to auction several bands of AWS-3 spectrum, which will be used on a shared basis for commercial wireless and incumbent government operations for a transition period following the auction. T-Mobile said more work needed to be done to ensure potential bidders understand the possible impact of federal incumbency, relocation timelines, and the potential for temporary or indefinite sharing of the spectrum.

Comcast said this year’s edition of its Xfinity Watchathon Week set records for VOD consumption with 61 million views and 50 million hours of spend binging. This year’s binge viewing fest ran from March 31 through April 6 and included a record setting day on April 5 with nearly 11 million hours of viewing for the biggest day ever for Comcast’s VOD service.
Time Warner Cable and the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions have teamed up to help promote better environmental awareness among the cable operator’s employees. Multi-screen delivery has always been an element of the TV-Everywhere strategy. Over the top content and on demand content can all be prepped ahead of time; linear, live video is a tougher nut to crack. All that video processing has be able to be done in real-time, or close to it. The equipment necessary to prep video – encoders, transcoders, video management platforms – can be almost anywhere in the network, usually depending on where the content is stored, but all capabilities need to be in the headend to distribute over the top, on demand, and linear video.
Time Warner Cable has upped its Wi-Fi game by adding Hotspot 2.0 abilities to most of its 33,000 access points across the nation. Hotspot 2.0, which is also known as Wi-Fi Certified Passpoint, allows mobile devices to automatically join a Wi-Fi network based upon preferences and network optimization whenever the user enters a Hotspot 2.0-enabled area.
AT&T is threatening to sit out the FCC’s upcoming 600 MHz incentive auctions if the Commission puts in place rules reserving portions of the spectrum for smaller carriers only. The FCC is planning to set aside up to 30 MHz in each market for smaller carriers to bid on once bidding for those markets hits a set threshold.
