Time Warner Cable partners with NYC Media Lab

The cable operator has pledged to contribute $1.6 million to the 2-year-old NYC Media Lab. Initially, TWC is specifically funding research at the organization into bandwidth usage trends. The NYC Media Lab was launched in 2010 by New York City Economic Development Corp. (NYCEDC), with participation of three major city universities.


Study: Tight race between Huawei, Cisco, Ericsson

Telecommunications vendors Cisco, Huawei and Ericsson were neck and neck on Infonetics Research’s equipment vendor leadership scorecard. While each vendor had different strengths, Huawei was ranked first on the scorecard, followed closely by Ericsson and Cisco.


Report: Fiber-based broadband to hit 19% of market share

Worldwide fixed-line broadband subscriptions will continue to grow at a healthy clip this year. According to a report by ABI Research, fiber-optic broadband share will grow to 19 percent by the end of this year, up from 16 percent last year. 


Al-Jazeera America prepares for Tuesday launch

The Qatar-based news organization will finally establish a firm foothold on American television Tuesday after a decade of trying. At 3 p.m. EDT, Al Gore's former Current TV will turn out the lights in more than 45 million TV homes, replaced by the new U.S. affiliate of Al-Jazeera.

Aussie electronics retailer offering UltraViolet backing

Australia’s largest electronics retailer is selling video on DVDs and Blu-ray disks accompanied by access rights through the UltraViolet digital rights locker. JB Hi-Fi is using the CSG Content Direct system from CSG Systems International to enable its UltraViolet online storefront in Australia and New Zealand.


Comcast tabs Martinez as SVP in Houston

Comcast announced this week that Ralph Martinez has been appointed as the senior vice president for the company’s Houston Region. In his new job, Martinez is the top executive responsible for operations, financial performance and customer service for the region, which includes 63 communities throughout the Greater Houston area.


RDK Management a good move by TWC, Comcast

With the formation of RDK Management, Comcast and Time Warner Cable not only reaffirmed their own commitment in regards to developing new boxes on the Comcast RDK, but also signaled to the rest of the cable industry that the RDK was truly an open community.


AT&T: T-Mobile’s spectrum auction plan will lead to failure

AT&T blasted a T-Mobile proposal for the FCC’s upcoming incentive auctions for 600 MHz spectrum, desirable for wireless broadband. The carrier is saying T-Mobile’s  plan would result in failure to generate sufficient revenue and “almost certainly doom the auction.” T-Mobile proposes caps or limits on how much of the 600 MHz spectrum AT&T and Verizon would be able to bid on.


Comcast, TWC team up to form RDK Management

Comcast and Time Warner Cable have formed RDK Management, LLC, which will take the reins on licensing, training, community support and code management for the Comcast Reference Design Kit. Comcast will contribute RDK components into the new entity, including the RDK code and specifications, related intellectual property rights and associated contracts.


Cisco 4Q profit grows but plans to cut 4,000 jobs

Cisco's revenue guidance for the current quarter was weaker than Wall Street expected, and shares fell sharply in extended trading. The company's stock fell $2.51, or 9.5 percent, to $23.87 in extended trading after the results were released.


FCC: IPTV subject to same fees paid by cable ops

The FCC has decided to apply to IPTV companies some of the same regulatory fees that have long applied to cable operators. The Commission made no determination, however, on whether direct broadcast satellite (DBS) providers should be similarly subject to the same regulatory fees.


Midcontinent gears up for network expansion

Starting in October, Midcontinent Communications will begin a 15-month expansion project that will span nearly 270 miles between its network operations in Sioux Falls, S.D. and the 511 Building in Minneapolis. The 511 Building is a secure redundancy center housing back-up and offsite disaster redundancy for over 150 network companies throughout the United States.


AT&T to serve up triple play to properties in Atlanta, Austin, Orlando

This morning AT&T announced an agreement with Camden Property Trust to serve up its triple play services to high-end apartment properties in Atlanta, Austin and Orlando. AT&T is provisioning the services to the properties over its FTTP network in the three cities, the first of which will go live this fall.


Lightpath nabs another award from NY PSC

For the 15th straight year, Lightpath has won an award from the New York State Public Service Commission for its services. Every year, the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) distributes commendations acknowledging telecommunications providers that consistently provide the highest levels of service and quality to customers in the state of New York.
