SMC gateways bond 16 channels for 800 MHz

SMC Networks will be using MaxLinear’s digital receivers for a line of DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems and gateways, including a new 16x4 cable gateway family. In full 16-channel receive mode of operation, the receiver provides up to 800Mbps downstream speeds and consumes less than 110 mW per channel.

Valley Tech offers to buy Alvarion for about $5.8M

The court-appointed receiver responsible for Alvarion is recommending a sale of the company for about $5.8 million in total, to Valley Telecom, which provides telecommunications services to an international clientele. The deal would be contingent upon approval of a plan to compensate Alvarion’s creditors.

TiVo’s new Roamio line of DVRs will feature a range of HTML5-based apps thanks to a new partnership with Opera Software. With the partnership, TiVo’s Roamio users can blend in HTML5 apps from the Opera TV Store while reaping the fruits of developers that take part in Opera’s SDK effort.

Frontier part of 1 Gbps build in Illinois

Frontier Communications will take part in the build out of a $1.5 million 1 Gbps network in Southern Illinois. The network, which was announced by Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, will serve residents, businesses and institutions, and is partnership between the city of Carbondale, Southern Illinois University and Connect SI.

Vodafone in talks to sell Verizon Wireless stake

Britain's Vodafone PLC, one of the world's largest cellphone companies, confirmed Thursday that it was talking to Verizon Communications about selling its U.S. operations. The U.K. company is mulling its options for its 45 percent stake in the U.S.'s Verizon Wireless, of which Verizon Communications owns the other 55 percent.

 This paper describes an architecture that serves as a deterrent to piracy of high-value video content delivered on-demand to devices using adaptive HTTP streaming. The system works by uniquely altering, or watermarking, video delivered to each viewer in such a way that it is visually imperceptible, persistent though video processing (such as re-encoding or re-capturing via a camera pointing at a screen), and detectable through special forensic techniques. The alterations in the video store information uniquely identify the user to which the video was served, so that if the video is pirated and distributed, it is possible to identify the pirating customer.

Beijing Gehua CATV Network has deployed the company's equipment. Beijing Gehua is a Tier 1 operator that builds, manages, and maintains cable TV networks. Its network consists of the city's 16 districts and counties. It has approximately 4.98 million registered users.

Invitel uses RGB gear to enable transition to MPEG-4

Invitel, a fixed line telecommunications and broadband Internet services provider (ISP) in Hungary, has selected and deployed RGB’s Video Multiprocessing Gateway (VMG) to help the company transition its line-up of HD programming from MPEG-2 to the more bandwidth-efficient MPEG-4/H.264 compression format.

Game on: TWC offers 300 live channels on Xbox

As promised, Time Warner Cable is now delivering 300 live channels to its subscribers over Xbox gaming consoles. Time Warner Cable first announced in June that it would be adding the Xbox to its list of TV Everywhere devices. The service is delivered over Time Warner Cable’s separate IP network via the cable operator’s My TWC TV app.

TiVo posts 2Q profit on settlement payment

TiVo reported a large second-quarter profit Tuesday after Google and Cisco paid it $490 million to settle a patent dispute. The company reported a loss if the settlement payments and other one-time items are excluded, but TiVo said it believes it has now achieved sustained profitability.

Cox tunes in CableWiFi alliance hotspots

Cox Communications’ subscribers can now tap into other MSOs’ Wi-Fi hotspots in some of the major cities across the nation, including Washington D.C., Boston, San Francisco and Philadelphia. To start with, Cox customers can look for the CableWiFi SSID when they are in Comcast, Cablevision and Bright House Networks systems. Time Warner Cable hotspots will be added into the mix in the fourth quarter of this year.

Dish, NCC Media partner up

NCC Media, the cable industry's national sales representative firm, has struck up a partnership with Dish Network to further the placement of ads in local markets. The agreement combines ad impressions in over three million Dish subscriber homes with those of NCC owners Comcast, Cox and Time Warner Cable in 25 of the largest markets across the nation.

Broadcom expands wearable devices platform with Wi-Fi direct

roadcom today announced an expansion to its wearable devices platform that will include Wi-Fi direct technology. According to the company, integrating Wi-Fi Direct into its Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED) platform, Broadcom is helping OEMs develop wearable products that communicate seamlessly to the cloud via smart mobile devices.

Facebook: Governments demanded data on 38K users

Government agents in 74 countries demanded information on about 38,000 Facebook users in the first half of this year, with about half the orders coming from authorities in the United States, the company said Tuesday. The social-networking giant is the latest technology company to release figures on how often governments seek information about its customers. Microsoft and Google have done the same.
