Cable Show: Business services will blossom with Time Warner Cable/Comcast deal

During Thursday’s business services session at The Cable Show moderator Gemma Toner addressed the elephant in the room right off the bat. Toner asked the Time Warner Cable and Comcast panelists about the impact of Comcast’s $45 billion deal to buy Time Warner Cable.

What a difference a few million customers thrown your way makes. Jon Fortt of CNBC opened the "Great Expectations: A Macro View of Consumers, Content and Communications" panel with a lunging question for Charter Communications CED Tom Rutledge. Charter had said Comcast’s purchase of Time Warner Cable was bad for consumers, he noted: “What changed your mind?”

Bright House Networks inks channel partnership with Intelisys

Bright House Networks has signed a strategic channel partnership agreement with technology services distributor Intelisys. As part of the agreement, Intelisys’ network of more than 1,200 downstream partners, consisting of sub agents, solution providers and cloud-focused partners, will be able to offer Bright House Networks’ voice, Internet, and advanced managed services.

Wheeler's rules: open Internet, competition, and don’t test him

If anyone thought the former head of the NCTA was going to come to the Cable Show and act all cuddly, they were very, very wrong. Wheeler warned, slapped, threatened and cajoled, though even his targets might not have noticed at first, given his measured tone and erudite phraseology.

Comcast adds MGM to digital store

Comcast is adding films from MGM to its Xfinity On Demand digital store lineup, which gives Comcast customers the ability to own and watch movies on various devices, often before the DVD release date. With the addition of MGM, the digital store, which made its debut in November, now has content available from Twentieth Century Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros.

Comcast targets 8 million Wi-Fi hotspots by year-end

Comcast is raising the stakes on its Wi-Fi game by drawing a bead on 8 million hotspots by the end of this year. Those 8 million access point, which will emanate from businesses, outdoor locations and neighborhood hotspots with second SSIDs in customers’ gateways, are slated for 19 of the country’s 30 largest cities. 

Juniper, Gainspeed propose "virtual" CCAP

Virtual CCAP would enable MSOs to leave all the equipment they now have in place, but as they grow, shift to remote PHY (shifting QAM PHY into nodes). MSOs could also stop deploying redundant routing resources in the form of CMTSs, in favor of enabling the edge routers that operators already have installed.

Cisco donates CPE software to RDK Management

Cisco said it will make its service provider CPE routing software available in open-source format, which opens the possibility of that software being used in RDK-compliant products. The potential products include everything beyond set-top boxes, including modems, routers or converged gateways.

Rovi and NCTC sign deal on DTA guides

The National Cable Television Cooperative has signed a master agreement for the use of Rovi DTA Guide by its membership. NCTC members will be able to license the Rovi DTA Guide through the cooperative and have access to Rovi technology to deploy Rovi guides on DTA devices.

Pace debuts RDK-based Elements middleware platform

Pace announced today that its Elements middleware platform was now available with full Reference Design Kit (RDK) compatibility. Pace also said it had expanded its relationship with RDK Management by signing up for the RDK Advanced Support Program (ASP) and Media Sponsorship Program (MSP).

Cablevision cues up cloud-based ads with ActiveVideo

Cablevision and ActiveVideo have partnered up on a new cloud-based advertising platform, CloudTV AdCast, which will make its debut later this year. American Express is slated to become the first advertiser to take the cloud-based ad platform for a trial spin with its interactive TV app called “Amex Now.”

Time Warner Cable’s Meeks a Vanguard Award winner

Time Warner Cable’s Phil Meeks has made the most of his six and half years in the cable operator industry and was recently rewarded by being named as one of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association’s Vanguard Award winners. Meeks took over the commercial services division of Time Warner Cable a little over a year ago when he was named executive vice president and chief operating officer, business services.
