In the media: Comcast lines up JPMorgan to advise on possible TWC bid

The plot has thickened once again in the ongoing story of Time Warner Cable being bought out by another cable operator. Reuters reported that Comcast has turned to JPMorgan Chase & Co. for its expertise in case it decides to throw a bid on Time Warner Cable

Victor named SVP, finance and business operations for Comcast Business

Comcast Cable announced this morning that effective immediately, Robert S. Victor was named senior vice president, finance and business operations, for Comcast Business. Victor reports to Bill Stemper, president of Comcast Business, and Stephen Perez will join his team as vice president, financial planning and operations.

Verizon to buy content delivery co. EdgeCast

Verizon is buying the content delivery company EdgeCast, boosting its video delivery and Internet services capabilities. Verizon said EdgeCast will become part of its digital media services business, increasing its ability to deliver content and site acceleration services to customers including studios, broadcasters and retailers.

For the ninth time, CED honored luminaries in the cable industry with its Pacesetter Awards. This year’s edition was held in October at the Omni Hotel next to the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in Atlanta. This year's recipients are pacesetting engineers from Time Warner Cable, Columbus Communications, Virgin Media, and Cable One. 

Time Warner Cable promotes Lee to SVP, mergers and acquisitions

Time Warner Cable announced this morning that Christian Lee had been promoted to senior vice president, mergers and acquisitions effective Dec. 31. Separately, Rob Marcus, who will take over the reins of the company on Jan. 1, said in a Bloomberg story that he was “the perfect guy to manage the M&A component out there.”

Senator seeks better return on broadband funds for states

US Senator Kelly Ayotte has introduced legislation that would ensure that rural states get at least 75 cents for every dollar they contribute to the USF. The money is collected through telephone bills, but Ayotte says New Hampshire gets back only 37 cents for every dollar it sends.

Verizon beefs up FiOS app with 16 more out-of-home channels

In order to woo and maintain subscribers, Verizon has added 16 new streaming channels to its out-of-home roster, which now gives it a total of 25. Verizon FiOS subscribers that have the free FiOS Mobile App are now be able to live stream the new channels from eligible devices, including the iPad, iPhone, select Android tablets and phones, and Kindle Fire tablets, both in and outside the home.

AT&T reduces fees for people who bring own devices

AT&T is joining T-Mobile in reducing monthly fees for people who pay for their own devices. It's the latest break from a longstanding practice of offering subsidies on devices to lock customers into two-year service agreements.

With iBeacon, Apple hopes to guide you around once you're inside. On Friday, Apple Inc. will begin using the technology at its 254 U.S. stores to send you messages tailored to where you are inside, provided you have downloaded the Apple Store app and have given Apple permission to track you.

AT&T adds device that detects falls, calls emergency services

The new mobile personal emergency response system (mPERS) uses AT&T’s wireless network for communications and location information. The device can automatically detect a fall and connect to a call center for two-way voice communication for immediate response and support.

Jinni uses TMS metadata for recommendations

Jinni attempts to go beyond the most basic categories (genre, actors, directors) to include what it calls “taste and mood” attributes such as mood, style, plot and setting. The company said it evaluates literally thousands of factors, which means Jinni’s recommendation engine has to rely on metadata that can very finely slice-and-dice the attributes of any video.

TWC hires former Insight exec as new COO

Despite swimming in a shark tank of potential suitors, Time Warner Cable announced this morning that former Insight Communications executive Dinni Jain would be joining the company on Jan. 13. Jain, who was chief operating officer and president of Insight prior to Time Warner Cable’s purchase of the company last year, will join Time Warner Cable as chief operating officer (COO.)

Comcast Business names Merritt director of Mountain Region

Comcast Business has hired Paul Merritt as the director for the company’s Mountain Region. In his new job, Merritt will be responsible for leading Comcast’s growth in the region as well as its expanding portfolio of business solutions and services, including Ethernet-based offerings.

Comcast Wholesale tabs Porch as VP & GM of AdDelivery

Todd Porch, who has overseen digital advertising efforts at Yahoo, Nexstar and Broadcast.com, has been named vice president and general manager of Comcast Wholesale’s AdDelivery service. Prior to his appointment to the Comcast Wholesale senior leadership team, Porch spent four years as executive director of the 250-member advertising operations and account management unit at Yahoo.
