CenturyLink has signed a multi-megawatt data center deal with CoinTerra to host CoinTerra's rapidly growing Bitcoin-mining operations in CenturyLink’s data centers. Austin-based CoinTerra designs, produces and operates hardware and software that power the Bitcoin blockchain ecosystem.

Cable vet Simmons joins Cablevision’s board

Cable industry pioneer Steve Simmons was elected to Cablevision’s board of directors effective immediately. Simmons joined the board as an independent director and his election increased Cablevision’s board to 18 members. Simmons, 68, has been chairman and chief executive officer of Simmons Patriot Media & Communications since 2002.

Windstream jumps on new REIT plan

Shares of Windstream jumped Tuesday after the broadband and communications company said it will move some of its assets into a real estate investment trust, reducing its debts. The Little Rock, Arkansas, company said it hopes to complete a tax-free spinoff of the REIT during the first quarter of 2015. The plan is subject to regulatory approval but Windstream said it has received some guidance from the IRS about the move.

Sprint swings to profit as subscriber losses slow

Sprint opened its new fiscal year with a rare quarterly profit. The carrier called a $23 million net income and $519 million operating income the highest in seven years. The black numbers came on fiscal first-quarter earnings per share of $0.01 and revenue of $8.78 billion, both of which exceeded analyst estimates.

A-L enabling Telefónica cloud DVR, mosaic services

Alcatel-Lucent said that Telefónica is using its Cloud DVR system to enable the cloud DVR service that Telefónica rolled out in February. A-L also said Telefónica is using its products for a service that gives Telefónica customers the option to select from up to six different streams in sporting events.

Charter’s all digital blazes a trail in former Bresnan systems

Charter Communications is looking to cross off the former Bresnan, and Optimum, systems from its all-digital checklist once the conversion kicks off in Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado. Charter’s stated goal is to have its all-digital upgrades completed across its entire 29-state footprint by the end of this year, with the former Bresnan systems scheduled for completion in November.

CSG, Grande Communications extend agreement

Texas-based Grande Communications has extended its nearly 15-year relationship with CSG International by signing a new multi-year deal. Under the new extension, Grande will work with CSG to implement additional solutions to provide “a holistic IT landscape to support subscribers in Texas.”

INSP gains 140,000 new subs through NCTC members

Family entertainment network INSP has added more than 140,000 new subscribers on multiple National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC) systems across the country. In April INSP, which is available nationwide via cable, satellite DBS and telcos, reached a multi-year renewal agreement with Time Warner Cable.

T-Mobile deal helps Rhapsody hit 2M paying subs

Rhapsody International Inc. said Tuesday its partnership with T-Mobile US Inc. has helped boost its number of paying subscribers to more than 2 million, up from 1.7 million in April. Last month, Rhapsody teamed up with the nation's fourth-largest carrier on a new service called unRadio. It allows users to stream randomly generated songs along a genre, artist or song name without ads.

CenturyLink extends agreement with Viamedia

CenturyLink has extended its agreement with Viamedia to include its three most recent IPTV markets: Phoenix; Omaha, Neb.; and Colorado Springs, Colo. CenturyLink had been offering its Prism IPTV service, based on Ericsson’s MediaRoom technology, in seven other markets.
