Comcast upgrades core network with Ciena

Comcast is future-proofing its core network with the addition of Ciena’s newest 100G technology, which will allow the nation’s largest ISP and cable operator to scale to 400G at some point. Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform is equipped with third-generation WaveLogic coherent optical line interfaces.

Bright House Networks tunes up faster data speeds

Bright House Networks has increased the download speed of its top data tier to 60 Mbps across its footprint, while offering small- and medium-size businesses a new speed of 70 Mbps. Bright House’s DOCSIS 3.0-based Lightning Internet service increased from 40 Mbps to 60 Mbps on the downstream.

Schooled: SCTE launches program to support business services

The SCTE is now offering a training and certification program that was designed to support the rollout of business services offerings by cable operators. The Business Class Services Specialist (BCSS) course and certification were created to address the need for experienced field technicians.

Report: AT&T considering overseas acquisition

AT&T may be looking to acquire an overseas carrier. The Journal cites "people familiar with the carrier's thinking" who said that AT&T is currently looking at a number of targets, and a deal could come before the end of the year.

Sprint announces upcoming LTE in 28 cities

Sprint announced it will be rolling out LTE soon in 28 more cities, including many spots along the Gulf Coast. Since Sprint introduced its LTE network in July, it has made the service available in 49 cities, with another 200 markets in the works.

In order to lure customers over from AT&T, Time Warner Cable has tuned up a tier in the Dallas/Fort Worth area that features 75 Mbps on the downstream. Time Warner Cable was slower out of the gates than most of the other major MSOs with its DOCSIS 3.0 deployments.

BCI buys Allegiance Communications

BCI, a new company formed by several former executives of Bresnan Communications, said it has purchased Allegiance Communications. No purchase price was provided. BCI and its venture partner said they expect this will be the first move in what they termed “an aggressive growth plan.”

Blockbuster U.K. goes into administration

The DVD and games rental company has become the latest entertainment firm to go into a form of bankruptcy in Britain. Blockbuster in Britain is a subsidiary of U.S.-based Blockbuster, which itself was reorganized under American bankruptcy laws and then acquired by Dish Network.

Report: U.S. mobile payments to hit $90B by 2017

Mobile payments are set to explode over the next few years, according to new research released from Forrester. According to the report, U.S. mobile payments will reach $90 billion by 2017, a 48 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from the $12.8 billion spent in 2012.

Comcast pumps $150M into Arris

In a stock deal with one of its main suppliers, Comcast has agreed to pay $150 million for a stake in Arris. Comcast will acquire 10.6 million shares in Arris, and the deal will be completed in concert with Arris’ $2.35 billion purchase of Google’s Motorola Home division.

Shaw enters into $700M deal with Rogers that includes AWS, Mountain Cable

Shaw Communications and Rogers Communications have signed a series of agreements that include the sale of Hamilton-based Mountain Cablevision and Shaw’s AWS wireless spectrum to Rogers. The agreements total $700 million and also include Shaw gaining Rogers’ one-third stake in TVtropolis.
