Objecting that using Title II to impose network neutrality rules is too heavy-handed, CenturyLink said that it yearly spends hundreds of millions of dollars to “build, maintain and update an open Internet network and does not block or degrade lawful content.”

Comcast, TWC to meet with Justice Dept.

Representatives of Comcast and Time Warner Cable will be meeting with the Justice Department on Wednesday, following reports at the end of last week that Justice lawyers are leaning against approving Comcast’s acquisition of TWC.

Bell Labs bumps G.fast to 10 Gbps

Bell Labs has achieved transmissions of 10 Gbps over copper wiring, using G.fast technology. The organization was able to sustain such speeds on loops of 50 meters. Beyond 50 meters, the transmission rate drops off considerably.

Justice Dept. reported skeptical of Comcast-TWC deal

Justice’s formal review of the deal is not due until next week, but Bloomberg – relying on unnamed sources – is reporting that that those reviewing the case at Justice are disinclined to approve the deal even with conditions.

CenturyLink has been rolling out the FTTH network over the past year. Last year, CenturyLink rolled out its gigabit service in Platteville, WI. In total, CentruyLink has brought its fiber network to residents and businesses in 17 cities across the U.S.

AT&T files separate challenge to FCC’s net neutrality rules

AT&T’s suit is somewhat surprising as the carrier was expected to allow wireless industry organizations lead the legal battle. Yesterday, both the NCTA and ACA filed suits on behalf of the cable industry, as did the CTIA on behalf of its wireless constituency.
